Behind the scenes: Kevin James snapped this photo early last November, on one of the most momentous shooting days of my life. On the left, you can see my friend Grace, posing for Sara Patton; on the right, you can see me on the sofa, posing for Rusty McDonald. Rusty had driven to Ohio from his home in North Carolina the night before, and he (along with Kevin, Sara, Tim Kruskamp and my husband, Chris) spent the day making art with Grace and me, along with two other models, Serina and Natalie. Tim’s studio space - an old, meandering downtown apartment building - was the perfect location for our shoot, with its stunning natural light and decaying rooms. I’d long dreamed of working with Rusty, so I’ll admit I was more nervous than usual prior to this shoot. However, I quickly learned that he and I share an artistic synergy similar to what Kevin and I experience together. On several occasions that day, it seemed as though my body was operating beyond my control, and it felt…well, fucking fantastic.I’m excited to report that I’ll be attending a group shoot this April at the Ohio State Reformatory, where I’ll be working with Rusty once again.
